BAND-TO-BAND TRANSITIONS AND CRITICAL POINTS IN THE NEAR-INFRARED TO VACUUM ULTRAVIOLET DIELECTRIC FUNCTIONS OF SINGLE CRYSTAL URANIA AND THORIA

Critical-point dielectric function investigations and spectral ellipsometry were utilized to compare and find the band-to-band transition energy values for single-crystal actinide samples of thorium oxide and uranium oxide. We used spectroscopic ellipsometry to investigate the dielectric characteristics of thorium oxide and uranium oxide over a wide range of wavelengths, from deep ultraviolet to near-infrared. UO2 has a critical point structure comparable to ThO2, however ThO2's is much more blue-shifted. ThO2 has a bandgap energy of 5.4 eV, while UO2 has a bandgap energy of 2.1 eV.
